Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic (WBC) closer Edwin Dias suffered an injury while celebrating his advance to the quarterfinals.

On the 17th (Korean time), the Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on its official website, “Dias has been diagnosed with a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee and will undergo surgery.”메이저사이트

It is known that it will take about 8 months until his return. MLB predicted, “In exceptional cases, there are cases where he returns after six months, but Dias is highly likely to not be able to play this season.”

Dias was injured in a match against the Dominican Republic held at Rondipo Park in Miami, Florida on the 16th. With a 5-2 lead in the 9th inning, Dias took the mound and struck out all 3 batters, performing a ‘KKK show’.

But the joy was short-lived. After a powerful throw, Dias felt pain in his right knee while jumping off the mound with his teammates and was forced to leave the field in a wheelchair.

His team, the New York Mets, also faced bad news. Dias wore a New York Mets uniform ahead of this season after receiving 102 million dollars (approximately 133 billion won) over five years, the highest amount ever paid by an MLB relief pitcher. He bought Dias for a huge sum, but was unable to use it from his first season.

Steven Cohen, owner of the Mets, said on his social network service (SNS), “Dias is a great player and a fierce competitor. Everyone at the Mets is shocked, but I hope Dias recovers quickly.”
