McCutchen went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a strikeout in the leadoff spot in the lineup against the New York Mets in the 2023 Major League Baseball World Series at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.
McCutchen led off the bottom of the first inning with a 1B1S situation and took Carlos Carrasco’s 85.8 mph (about 138 km/h) slider up the middle and crushed it in front of the left-field fence. With the hit, he reached the 2,000-hit plateau.
McCutchen became the 291st player in Major League Baseball history to reach 2,000 hits. Only five active players have 2,000 hits. He joins Miguel Cabrera (Detroit Tigers), Nelson Cruz (San Diego Padres), Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds), and Elvis Andrews (Chicago White Sox).
“I wanted to do it here in Pittsburgh,” McCutchen said after the game, “and I’m glad I was able to do it here, it’s a special moment.”
McCutchen was selected by Pittsburgh with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2005 draft. He made his first big league appearance in 2009 and played in Pittsburgh through the 2017 season. He was acquired by the San Francisco Giants in a trade prior to the 2018 season and bounced around with the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers before signing a one-year, $5 million deal with Pittsburgh ahead of this season.
In 57 games this season, McCutchen is batting .265 with eight doubles, 23 home runs, 52 RBIs, seven runs scored and an .804 OPS. His career numbers are 1952 games, 2000 hits, 295 home runs, 1025 RBI, 1149 runs scored, 212 doubles, .277 OPS, .837 slugging percentage.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, gave up a run-scoring single to Jeff McNeil in the top of the fourth inning, but tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Zack Swinski. The teams were unable to score the rest of the way, and Pittsburgh held on for the 2-1 win.
Pittsburgh remained in first place in the National League Central with a 33-30 record. The Pirates return home for a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, starting on April 14.
