Double-digit losses for the first three consecutive years in baseball. Hanwha set an ignominious record last year. Until last year, losing felt more natural to Hanwha than winning, but if you let your guard down, you’re in for a big surprise. Because once it does, it explodes, and it explodes hard.

Han, who set a new Korean Baseball Organization record on April 7, 2019, with 20 at-bats in three innings against Lotte, showed his intensity on April 25 against Kiwoom with 18 at-bats in one inning.

On April 27, the KBO office released data on the most at-bats in a single inning in the league’s history. Hanwha is tied for first and second on the list. First, Hanwha sent 18 different players to the plate in the eighth inning of a 3-6 loss to Kiwoom at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on Aug. 25. It was the first time in 22 years since LG accomplished the same feat in the eighth inning against KIA on Aug. 11, 2001. On offense, Hanwha pounded out 13 runs on 10 hits, including one home run, five walks and 13 RBIs. It was the most runs scored in a single inning and the second-most RBIs in a single inning in history. The offense lasted 68 minutes. It was a nightmare first inning for Kiwoom.

Hanwha also holds the record for the most at-bats. Hanwha had 20 at-bats against Lotte on April 7, 2019, at Sajik Stadium in Busan. After Ji-Sung-jun led off with a walk, Hanwha scored the following runs: Jang Jin-hyuk singled to right, Oh Seon-jin walked, Jeong Geun-woo singled to right, Jeong Jeong-won hit a three-run homer, Song Kwang-min singled to right, Gerard Hoying walked, Kim Tae-gyun singled to center, Noh Si-hwan struck out, Ji-Sung-jun doubled to right-center, Jang Jin-hyuk singled to center, Oh Seon-jin singled to center. Nine batters reached base at least three times, including Jung Geun-woo who flied out to right, Jung Won who singled to left, Song Kwang-min who doubled to left, Hoying who tripled, Kim Tae-gyun who singled to right, Noh Si-hwan who singled to center, Ji Sung-joon who doubled behind center, and Jang Jin-hyeok who flied out to left. Lotte’s starting pitcher against Hanwha was Jang Si-hwan, followed by Yoon Gil-hyun, but they were unable to stop the Hanwha explosion. The game ended in a rain delay. Hanwha went on to win 16-1.

Despite the pleasing record, Hanwha’s performance hit rock bottom that year. The team finished the season with a 58-86 record and a .403 winning percentage, good for ninth place. Lotte finished 10th behind Hanwha with 48 wins, 93 losses, 3 draws, and a 0.340 winning percentage.
